Greene King Brewery Tour

Post by dwkmgf » Sat Sep 05, 2009 10:49 am

I mentioned this at Thursdays meet and there was some interest in organising a run to the Greene King Brewery in Bury St Edmunds where Old Speckled Hen is brewed. Tours last about 2 hours and end up at their Brewery Tap for a tasting or two. Cost is £8 per person - although there is a group discount (I think a minimum of 20 is required).

I am looking at a late October Saturday date of say the 24 or 31 (hope that fits with you Nicole) - as I am on holiday the first part of October). Tours start at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm - 12.30 would seem the best. There is a lovely GK pub around the corner from the Brewery that has great food and the town centre is about a 5 minute walk from the pub. When I dropped in a couple of weeks ago they said that they could organise parking in the brewery car park for a group of cars.

If you are interested names below please - and as I need to let GK know in advance

Sounds good to me Dave, Dawn may be interested too, I'm sure they do lager  .

I thought the Morland brewery was responsible for OSH or has that been taken over by GK ?

I have just spoken to Greene King and we can do the 24 October but it will have to be the 2pm tour - sorry if that causes a problem for anyone but a group already had the 11am slot.

They have asked me to confirm the booking by Friday of this week so if you can let me have your names please that would be much appreciated - I have booked for 20 and I will need your money before the visit.

So far I have:

Dave K
Nicole
Adrian & Dawn
Mark & Decia - possibly
Jon Tully - anyone else from EAMG welcome

Thought there would be a bit more interest for this one - but I will confirm the 11 who have put their names down so far. I will pay your £8 and you can let me have it on the day (or surrender your passport until debt is recovered!!!). Anyone else wanting to come along feel free to post your names and I'll let Greene King know.

Hi

I can collect the money over the next couple of Essex Roadsters meets. Those from further afield I'll collect on the day.

Anyone interested in lunch? There is a pub just around the corner that serves very nice food. If we got to Bury St Edmunds for about 11 - had a bit of a wander, lunch in the pub at about 12, tour at 2 and then home. Let me know cause I'll try and get a menu and book us in for lunch.

Hang fire with letting me have your money - I'm hoping that if we hit the magic 20 then we will get a discount.

Okay everyone who had their name down is now booked in - so no leaving the country!! We can have a maximum of 20 - and as I am keeping one spot for my good lady we have just one place left.

The pub that I mentioned previously is the Dog & Partridge which is literally round the corner from the brewery. I have booked us as a group into the pub for lunch just so they are pre-warned. The menu can be found here:

http://www.gkpubs.co.uk/uploads/33bf157 ... 95a60a.pdf

I have received some health & Safety info from the brewery which is as follows:

1. Wear flat shoes with no open toes or sandals
2. Comfortable clothing is recommended (trousers preferable as there are open tread stairways)
3. There are 100 steps to climb in the brewhouse so anyone with mobility problems may be denied access
4. They can not accept anyone under 12 on the tour
5. Stay with the group
6. No smoking
7. Do not arrive drunk
8. Do not touch machinery or try swimming in the beer (applies only to Nicole  )

For those coming from the Essex area - Bury St Edmunds is about an hour from Bishop's Stortford so I would suggest meeting at Birchwood Services at about 9.30 - then we have plenty of time to get to the brewery and have a little look around the town before lunch. Those coming from elsewhere we'll see you there. I will try and sort out parking at the brewery.

Any problems just let me know
