2nd Annual Arctic Circle Run - DELAYED START

Post by Scarlet Fever » Mon Oct 06, 2008 5:22 pm

After the laugh we had trial running this in February this year, I've decided to run it again. :D

In true Harrods Christmas Advert style...

The Date... February 6th 2009.

The Time... 10:00pm.

The Place... Thurrock Services.

The objective is a complete lap of the M25, with the hood down - now you know why it's called the Arctic Circle Run! It's fliipin' freezing!! But a good laugh. This is the only time the M25 is fun to drive. :D

Notes

- The F/TF heater is good, but not good enough for this lunacy. Minimum 3 layers, hat, gloves & thick socks.
- Thermos Flask of hot drink is also recommended (although drinking it while driving probably isn't a good idea!) :o
- Unzip your rear screens and take great care when lowering the hood - the plastic goes brittle at low temps and can split.
- A complete lap is 120 miles, we travel anti-clockwise from Thurrock so that we can all blast through the Dartford tunnel at 2am together!
- Jams are very unlikely, few roadworks at this time of the morning/year and very little other traffic, last time we made it around without stopping, hopefully the A2 roadworks section no longer has the diversion so a complete lap should be possible.
- It's not a race, just an unbelievably rare chance to enjoy the most infamous motorway with a group of other mad MG people.

--------------------------------------------------------

This will be an F Register backed run, depending on numbers. If more than 12 people interested then it'll go through the official channels and i'll get some rally plates etc made up (for a nominal charge). If less than 12 i'll run it as an Essex Roadsters independent event and it'll be free.

Also, It would be good to do this as a relay, in so far as the HEAT wheels group could start from South Mimms at say 12:40am and join the convoy and the SEF crew could join us at say 1:30am at Clacketts Lane so that we all blast the Dartford Tunnel together - this way everyone does the tunnel at once, we all do a complete lap, but no one has to double back on themselves and do sections more than once.

UPDATE

- Thurrock group leaves at 10pm

- Rolling start at South Mimms (due to rubbish traffic lights at the roundabout making leading the whole convoy off here a logistical headache) circa 10:30pm

- Everyone comes off at Clacketts Lane circa 11:30pm to regroup and collect the last group.

- We all do the Dartford tunnel together around midnight

- We all exit at Thurrock to say goodbyes and have a meal / warm up a bit, South Mimms & Clacketts group head off to complete thier laps. Window stickers will be available from here.

- South Mimms group peels off circa 12:30am, Clacketts group carries on.

- Clacketts group finishes around 1:30am

Not sure if this will affect the run, i suspect not, but the toll for the Dartford Crossing is going up to £1.50 as from the 15th of this month (November).

I think it is going to be free after a certain time of day though so the run shouldn't be affected.

UPDATE:

Dartford toll charges as from 15th November 2008 = £1.50 for a car - between 6am and 10pm So it should be free for us :D

Details...
Officials are considering raising tolls from £1 to £1.50 for cars and from £2.90 to £4 for big lorries.

The AA warns it could force more than 1.6 million vehicles on to local roads instead, triggering jams across north-east London.

It would paralyse the congested Blackwall Tunnel and also hit areas such as Romford in Essex with millions of drivers seeking "free" routes avoiding the northbound Dartford tunnel and the southbound QEII bridge that form the M25 crossing.

The AA said the price rise would force commuters? travelling costs up by about £110 a year.

The proposals are revealed in a Department for Transport consultation paper, which proposes tolls be scrapped between 10pm and 6am.

-----------------------------------

He he! Just found this online too, made me smile:
It is an insult to drivers to impose a "congestion charge" upon vehicles, when it is only the collection of the charge itself that is causing the congestion.
Too true. :)

Timewise, for me, there is nothing between choosing Thurrock or South Mimms. Will probably go via A1 to South Mimms though as, if I go country route to get to A1, it is 12 mile less. Plus there is Baldock tunnel and the tunnel under the wotsit shopping centre on the way :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Jon, we'll need to do it that you phone me when you join that pack at South Mimms, so that I can get the timing right for my rolling start at the M40 junction!

Will def be doing the South Mimms option, the lure of the Hatfield tunnel is strong :D

Probably start at Thurrock as it is six and two threes for me - and besides coming past the M11 on the final bit to South Mimms - it would be all to tempting to just peel off!!

On the subject of timing, it's about 25 minutes from South Mimms to Thurrock (did this stretch last night on the way back from the NAC), i am wondering if we should pull the start time forward to say 11:30pm at Thurrock?

What do you reckon?

Any time from, say 10pm, will give the same results I guess, it'll be dark and cold.

We'll be joining in at South Mimms. We can just carry on round to the M3 when it's over save doubling back on ourselves.
