Re: engine cut out at 50mph, now nothing
Are you getting a spark at the plugs? What do they look like? I assume if you tried a new distributor cap you also tried a new rotor arm? Ignition coil/king lead? Crankshaft position sensor? Do you have compression in all the cylinders? (cam belt slipped/broken). PS The hiss from the fuel tank cap i...

VVC F for sale in graphite S reg 45k
I advised in the purchase of this for a friend's son two years ago, now he has a job in London and doesn't use it, hence sale. PO had it for fifteen years and did 18k miles in that time, now on 45ish. It comes with matching hard top and very rare MGF branded boot safe. It has a modern ICE system(OEM...

Re: Rubber suspension bushes supplier
If you still have access to the pump it is worth letting all the fluid(/air) out with the car on it's wheels. Check the condition of the fluid as red OAT and green ethylene glycol when mixed can turn into a jelly. This would definitely give a harder ride as it wouldn't flow through the interconnecti...

Re: immobiliser code
What 'someone' has told you is referring to the Emergency Key Access (EKA) procedure. Search EKA in the archives - the white window in the banner at the top of page. There may be a simpler solution if you recently changed the fob battery - the fob needs to resynchronise with the immobiliser after a ...

Re: Soft top rear clips
Welcome aboard, Ade. It sounds to be fine from your description. The soft top overhangs a gutter at the back so provided the gasket strip is present you should stay watertight under 'normal' weather conditions. The rivets should only need replacement when the hood fabric is changed.

Re: Drivers door remains locked
Good point Bruce but I have a trickle charger! I found that I had an early CDL off a scrapped car which has the door lock hoop in metal instead of plastic - very rare. After the customary amount of juggling it went in and the car is now is now useable. So I washed much of the recent road salt off th...

Re: Drivers door remains locked
Thanks Jerry. Strangely I walked past it today and noticed that both sill buttons were up - no idea when or why that happened - even under a carport the air temperature was still well below freezing. I had left it 'unlocked' but both were resolutely locked when I had last played with it. JOY - no de...

Re: Drivers door remains locked
Hi Geoff, watching with interest, I am sure I have read about this before on here (maybe yours!) and have also forgotten how to recover it with or without damaging the card. I can't see how access without the door card would help if the door remains shut. Although you could then direct a hot air blo...

Drivers door remains locked
This happened without warning a couple of days ago on a 75th Anniversary F - 1999 (so spare door cards not readily available). The passenger door unlocks normally with the fob and the immobiliser works, the car can be driven. Pressing the fob lifts the drivers door sill button but it immediately loc...

Re: Problem with fuel overflow at my Mk1
The fuel pump pressurises the rail which runs through the injectors. There is always surplus pressure after inital priming because the fuel pump is continuously energised whenever the engine is running to cope with acceleration demand. Surplus rail pressure is bled back into the tank by a simple val...

Currently available 15" rear tyres
Up until recently I was able to get 205x50x15 in both Toyo Proxes TR1 and Falken Ziex 310 from Micheldever Tyres but they are currently not listed/no longer available. Does anybody know if it is just Micheldever or if the manufacturers have ditched these low volume sizes? There were other rather unc...

Re: Front Suspension Sphere Replacement
It might be that when you hit road bumps the 400 psi is momentarily increased above the leak threshold so that it squirts out a tiny amount of fluid past the breach which then reseals at normal pressure. This could be fluid into the gas section of a sphere so that nothing shows on the outside.

Re: Front Suspension Sphere Replacement
I would only replace what is damaged*. All spheres (even new unused ones) are at least 20 years old and have a service life which I believe was designed to be 15 years. All of them are well beyond this now, though these have proved extremely tough and well designed components. The best answer* is re...

Probably a bit late now Jerry, but if it is of similar construction to the F - it looks it - you can disassemble it and replace the individual bulbs/clean up their contacts.

Re: Fluctuating temperature gaugue
You will need to remove the engine access panel behind the seats. The gauge sensor is black or light blue sticking down from the front left corner of the cylinder head. A useful reference can be found on Dieter's wonderful MGF website http://www.mgfcar.de/ Go down the index on LHS to 'Sensoren' ther...

Re: Fluctuating temperature gaugue
Hi David, probably the gauge temperature sender unit beginning to fail internally. I had one which would be steady until you accelerated hard when the inrush of cooler water caused the gauge needle to drop (instantly) to zero and then recover slowly (damped normal rise) back to normal as the revs ea...

Re: MOT Failure
New subframe mounts are readily available but the removal without damage of (probably) corroded bolts is the worry. A relatively simple job then becomes much more involved - well worth leaving to a good garage with a lift.

Re: Timing Belt - Manual Tensioner
Chris, I think they are assuming that you have the tensioning spring still attached. Once you are happy that the engine can rotate a few cycles in slow time without losing timing, you loosen the backplate bolt to allow for any belt tension changes after movement. You should then retighten the backpl...
