Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

how to clean cooling sytem after HGF?

Post by frenchdave » Tue Dec 08, 2015 9:58 am

Changed head gasket after car had oil in water. Flushed the car by removing bottom house at front under car, and pumped a hose through for about 5 minutes and a lot of sludge came out, however still lots more in system. Can anyone reccomend a way of cleaning it? Have seen someone saying a dishwasher tablet!!
Any advice

Half a bottle cap of liquid laundry detergent will do. It won’t be aggressive to aluminium parts and will still clean out the oily stuff. Also, it doesn’t develop as much foam as eg fairy liquid for the dishes. Fill clean water into the system, bleed and add the detergent. Drive the car for about half an hour then drain and rinse thoroughly, and refill with coolant mix.

This is what you will be looking for at your local carrefour, super-u or whatever:

Hi Dave,

If all else fails, and after two head gasket replacements I've tried all the dishwasher tablets and even tho' they work to a degree, this is THE ONLY stuff that actually removes it believe me.

I used the Holts 2 part cleaning fluids. only 6.99 in Halfords and worked a treat as the old under chassis cooling were very rusty.
