New Year, New Regions

We look forward to 2021 with some hope. A vaccine is being rolled out which should allow us to return to a semblance of normality, when that may actually be is still conjecture, however. Here at the MGF Register, we are looking forward to 2021 by looking forward to our postponed MGF25 event in July, an increasing raft of summer events, and by welcoming some new regions to the club. Whilst they can’t operate as normal with runs, shows, etc at the moment we hope that you can join them on their social media feeds and help build the Region ready for action later in the year.
So, where are they?
Midlands Borders – Rob Parry has set the group up to cover those areas to the left of Birmingham and bordering Wales, hence the name! Rob says “Our region covers Worcestershire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Staffordshire. Although being setup during these difficult times we will be in contact with those who have registered your cars with the MGF Register, or are MGF Register members in the region, with regular newsletters and when allowed we will be arranging events where we look forward to meeting current members, and, hopefully attracting new ones.
If you have any specific questions or queries I can be contacted directly via e-mail at: midlands.borders@mgfregister.org.”

Scotland – Glenn Nielson has been on the MGF scene for a long time and is associated with the Highlander events and the old Central Scotland MGF region. He has recently taken ownership of an 85th Anniversary TF and is keen to get like-minded owners together. Look out for further details but in the meantime, he can be contacted on Scotland@mgfregister.org
Leicestershire – Steve White currently runs the Heart of England group but is also not far from Leicestershire and is setting up a new region to cover this area shortly. Look out for social media soon but in the meantime, he can be contacted on Leics@mgfregisster.org

We have also a vacancy to take over the Lancashire Region where Neil Rushton has retired from MG life. If you live in the Manchester/Lancashire area and would like to run a Region then please get in touch.
Likewise, if you live in the Merseyside/Cheshire area where our current incumbent, Simon Davies, is looking to step down soon.
If you are interested in these roles or would like to help the club out by running a social group in your area (if it’s not already covered) then please contact Tim Morris at regions@mgfregister.org.

Photo Competition

Marc Pearson’s winning photo

This year, due to Covid, we have held our annual photo competition in a different way. Rather than photos being submitted for judging as normal we put them on an event Facebook page and asked members to “Like” the pictures that they….liked. However we did ask that the photos were taken during the year in the usual way, albeit there were not that many opportunities. Nonetheless some great shots were entered with around 65 photos to be perused.

The overall winner was Marc Pearson with a colour coordinated shot of his monogram TF. The other winners were:- Alan Bradley, Tim Rowe, Leigh Crane, Ian Wright, Kim Tiller, Anne Ogden, Mark Humpage, David Coulthard and Nigel May.

Next year we hope to be able to get out and about some more and can return to our normal style of professionally judged competition.

Thanks to Ian Wright for organising this competition at the last minute!

All the photos have been included in a downloadable calendar which you can print off at home.

25th Anniversary in Safety Fast

The MG Car Club magazine Safety Fast marked the 25th Anniversary of the MGF in no mean way – an appropriate 25 pages of MGF/TF content no less!

Cover stars Rob and Jane Parry are interviewed by Jeff Ruggles about their quest to save as many pre-production and early MGFs as possible and their collection now reaches around eight (we’re never too sure as they’ve probably found another by now!).

Roger King was a director of public affairs at SMMT and was invited to the Press Launch of the MGF at Coombe Abbey Hotel in 1995. He recalls the weekend and the impact of the new car.

Tim Morris is President of the MGF Register and goes back over 25 years of the MGF Register itself from its humble beginnings in late 1995, just as the car was being delivered to customers.

Ian Pogson worked at Longbridge and was the Chief Engineer for MG Motor, notably responsible for the 85th Anniversary TF. He recalls his time at the factory when the TF was re-launched under NAC ownership.

At the back of the magazine we look back at the first birthday party at Gaydon and Tim Morris backs it all up with his usual SF column.

Phew, what a scorcher, as they say!

Winter FasTForward

15th Anniversary edition of FasTForward – Out Now!

The Winter edition of FasTForward has been published and it’s a special edition. This is Issue number 60 which means that it has been a barely believable 15 years since that first edition was printed. Who would have thought that the MGF Register would still be publishing the only MGF/TF dedicated magazine all these years later?

In Issue 59 Adrian Tucker-Peake took a detailed look a the Hybrid 200HPD TF and in this issue he details the follow-up project – the Versatile Environmental Road Vehicle (a Rover 25) which was developed in 2004 for the government’s Ultra Low Carbon Car Challenge. It’s another case of “what might have been” if MG-Rover had not closed down in 2005.

Phil Rigby takes us on to the track in Part 2 of hi Rookie Racer’s Ramblings as he prepares for racing in his MGF and Tim Morris explores the rave culture of the MGF (well, at least the first five MGF birthday parties anyway!).

Along the way John Riley shows us his 85th Anniversary TF and Tim Rowe doesn’t go on the MGF Register National Weekend. There have been a couple of events organised with full CV19 safety measures and Geoff Northcliffe writers about his trip to Gaydon for the MGCC 90th Anniversary celebration and we also take a trip to Leonardslee Gardens n Sussex where the South East Centre were running a Motorsport UK test event with 120 MGs, again fully CV19 compliant.

As usual, there are news and views from around the Regions and Internationally. The magazine is available by subscription for four issues only at £16 for Members and £20 for non-members/Europe (£22 for rest of world).

New YouTube Channel

The MGF Register has recently opened up a YouTube channel and needs subscribers! Take a look at the channel here:- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBKVuVzaYznHFE_PetcIKYw/

The aim of the channel is to host archive videos of MGF Register events and some original MG Rover material about the MGF. Eventually it is hoped that we can begin to create some original video material to go hand in hand with our quarterly magazine, FasTForward.

The channel hosts video including some Pride of Longbridge Rallies, MGFests and more local runs that were filmed as well.

The latest video to be added is a Brooklands Members production – the pilot episode of Spinning Wheels from 2017 which featured MGF Register president Tim Morris and his 2000MY MGF at Brooklands. Tim is also a member of the BM.tv production team and this video was used to try out locations and styles for future episodes.
